1. Western Canada Cup Rankings

The latest rankings for the Western Canada Cups can be found in the Download section of the AASSA website. The fourth and final meet in this series will be the RU Fast meet scheduled for March 5-7, 2010 in Calgary.

3. Alberta on the International Scene

European Fall World Cups
The first three World Cups of the season were held in Europe this November. It was a good start for Alberta’s international skaters.

Berlin, Germany (November 6-8, 2009)
In the men Brock Miron, of Cornwall, ON, competed in the two 500m races, finishing 17th the first day and 13th the second (B Division). Meanwhile Steven Elm, of Red Deer, finished 21st in the 1500m (A Division) and 13th in the 5000m (B Division). The women had a good meet with Anastatia Bucsis, of Calgary, competing in her first ever World Cup. She finished 17th and 20th in the 500m (B Division). Also in the 500m Tamara Oudenaarden, of St. Albert, had some good results finishing 5th and 7th (B Division). Rounding out the competition Nicole Garrido, of Edmonton, finished 11th in the 3000m (Division B).

Heerenveen, Nertherlands (November 13-15, 2009)
Jamie Gregg, of Edmonton, saw his first World Cup action of the season finishing 7th and 16th in the 500m (A Division) and 2nd in the 1000m (B Division). Elm meanwhile finished 19th in the 5000m (B Division) and 8th in the 1500m (B Division).

This weekend again had Oudenaarden and Bucsis competing in the 500m (B Division), with their best results being 15th and 17th respectively. Garrido again competed in the 3000m (B Division) finishing 16th.

Hamar, Norway (November 21-22)
Hamar was the only long distance World Cup of the season with the men skating the 1500m and 10000m and the women skating the 1500m and 5000m. Keith Sulzer, of Calgary, raced both distances in his first World Cup appearance, finishing 19th in the 1500m (B Division) and 17th in the 10000m (B Division).

Meanwhile, on the women’s side Garrido had her best result of the season finishing 8th in the 5000m (B Division) and 9th in the 1500m (B Division).
