The Speed Skate Cellar will be setting up a table during the Oktoberfest meet in Calgary this upcoming weekend. Here are the details;

3. Alberta Athlete of the Year
The 2008 Athlete and Team of the Year Awards, Coaching, Officiating and Volunteer Recognition Awards will be presented at the Alberta Sport and Recreation Leadership Summit in Banff on Friday, April 17, 2009. The Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation recognizes the contributions that Albertans make to sport through the following awards:
Athlete and Team of the Year Award
Recognizes and celebrates the significant achievements, performances and contributions of Alberta's amateur athletes. These athletes are outstanding role models who inspire other Albertans to higher achievements at the recreational or competitive level. Since the program began in 2002, 24 athletes and 4 teams have been recognized.
Coaching Recognition Awards
Recognizes coaches for their successful and outstanding achievements in developing Alberta's amateur athletes. Since the program began in 1987, 60 coaches have been recognized.
Officiating Recognition Awards
Recognizes officials for their successful and outstanding achievements in officiating sports that involve Alberta's amateur athletes. Since the program began in 1992, 34 officials have been recognized.
Sport Volunteer Recognition Awards
Recognizes and honour the significant contributions of individuals who devote their volunteer time and effort to the development of sport. Since the program began in 1987, 78 sport volunteers have been recognized.

4. Level 1 Officials Course
The Edmonton Speed Skating Association is presenting a Level 1 Speed Skating Canada Officials' Course on Saturday, November 1, 2008 from 10 am to 4:30 pm at the University of Alberta. The course will be taught in room CW303 in the Department of Biological Sciences on the northwest corner of the North Campus.

5. Speed Skating Canada
Calgary – Three Calgary-based speed skaters from the Canadian National and Canadian Development Team and one Olympic Oval High Performance Short Track Program skater qualified for fall world cup competitions, making up the largest contingent of Western Canadian skaters on Canada’s World Cup team in more than five years.
Jessica Hewitt, 21, from Kamloops, BC, Jessica Gregg, 20, from Edmonton, AB, and Michael Gilday, 21, Yellowknife, NWT, will join Canada’s world cup team in Salt Lake City, USA, Vancouver, BC, Beijing, China and Nagano, Japan. Richard Shoebridge, 23, from Cambridge, ON, will only compete in World Cups #3 and #4 in Asia.
Eight Calgary-based short trackers including Gregg, Hewitt and Gilday, who are National and Development Team athletes, and five from the Olympic Oval short track program competed in the Canadian Fall World Cup team selection in Vancouver, Sept. 16-18, 2008. Hewitt, who has been part of the National Development Team since 2006, finished 3rd overall at the competition with two first place wins in the 1,500 and 1,000 metres. This will be her first time competing at a World Cup.
Gregg and Gilday have both qualified and competed in World Cups in the past two years and earned team relay medals. Gregg has also won one individual world cup bronze medal in the 500 metres. Gregg was ranked 2nd and Gilday 7th in Canada at the Team Selection.
This will be Shoebridge’s his first time on the world cup circuit. He was a member of the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 National Development Teams.
